Patna, Feb 3 : Some 1,500 village level workers in Bihar overseeing implementation of a job guarantee programme have themselves been sacked by the government after they agitated for higher pay.
The Bihar government Tuesday removed about 1,500 Panchayat Rozgar Sevaks (officials at the village level) overseeing implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme.
Thousands of Panchayat Rojgar Sevaks across the state have been on strike since mid-January, demanding a hike in their pay.
"The government decided to remove 1,500 Panchayat Rozgar Sevaks because they failed to return to work despite being warned," Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who also holds the finance portfolio, said.
Modi ruled out any possibility to hiking the pay of the striking employees.
Meanwhile, more than 300,000 state government employees have been on strike since early last month demanding implementation of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission in “letter and spirit” after failure of talks with deputy chief minister Modi.
