Patna, Feb 9 : Ten policemen, including a police station chief, were killed Monday when suspected Maoist guerrillas attacked them in Bihar's Nawada district, the police said.

Armed Maoist guerillas attacked a police team visiting Mahulitand village in Nawada district, some 175 km from here, Additional Director General (police headquarters) Neelmani, said.

"We have received information that 10 policemen were killed," Neelmani said.

"Ten policemen, including officer in-charge of Kauakol police station Rameshwar Ram, were killed by the Maoists," said an official at the police headquarters here.

Neelmani said Ram was invited as the chief guest at a function in Mahulitand village to mark Sant Ravidas Jayanti.

"When an 18-member police team led by Ram reached the village, Maoist guerillas suddenly attacked and shot them dead," he said.

Official sources said that the remaining eight policemen escaped the attack.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs.2 million each to the families of the policemen killed in the Maoist attack.

"An intensive operation has been launched against Maoists in districts bordering neighbouring Jharkhand," Neelmani said.
