Patna, (Bihar Times): The three major UPA constituents of Bihar––the RJD, Congress and LJP––appear to have reached an agreement on seat-sharing for the 40 parliamentary seats of the state.
Reports from New Delhi said that under the compromise formula, LJP can contest 13 seats, Congress five and RJD 22. Paswan’s party has been insisting for 16 seats while Congress was asking for more than 10.
RJD chief and railway minister Lalu Prasad made a visit to LJP president Ram Vilas Paswan’s residence on Friday night to bless his grand-daughter. Though a function was organized in this regard it seems that the ‘political grand-fathers’ of Bihar discussed politics more than the new born baby in an hour long stay.
Lalu reportedly impressed upon Paswan the need for a united fight by the UPA in Bihar to keep communal forces at bay.
Lalu, while talking to newsmen on Saturday, said that “when our collective goal is to win general elections then why should we fight against each other...We want to fight elections together.”
Till Friday night Paswan had not held any direct talks with Lalu Prasad over the issue of alliance but discussed it with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her political adviser Ahmed Patel a number of times.
Reports said that Patel met Paswan a few days back as well giving rise to speculation that Congress and LJP could join hands first and then prevail upon Prasad to fall in line.
Last time RJD had contested 26 and won 22, LJP contested eight and won four and Congress contested four and won three. Rest 11 seats were won by the NDA––five by BJP and six by JD(U). Political observers are of the view that if the UPA really fights unitedly than the NDA may not be able to increase its seat tally much.
