Patna, (Bihar Times): Apart from other things the global economic meltdown has its impact on the silk industry of Bihar. This notwithstanding the fact that the rate of dollar is still favourable for the export of goods from India.
A news agency report from Bhagalpur said that many silk weavers looking for alternative sources of livelihood. Many factories have been shut down and weavers have moved to other cities in search of employment.
“Earlier, I used to run around four looms but now due to recession I am now selling vegetables on the road. Things have turned from bad to worse,” Mumtaz Ali, a former silk weaver of Bhagalpur, was quoted by ANI.
According to Manoj Agrawal, an exporter, the silk material made in Bhagalpur is mostly used in furnishing, which again is very much sought after in the United State. But now due to the economic slowdown, the export of silk has also gone down.
