Bihar Assembly proceedings to be telecast now

Patna, (Bihar Times): The proceedings of the Bihar assembly are likely to be telecast live very soon.

According to reports the assembly secretariat is gearing up for the direct telecast and it has approached Doordarshan to make necessary arrangements for the same.

“We held a meeting with Patna Doordarshan authorities and have also made a written request to them. Once they approve our request, we will be ready for the live telecast of the next assembly session,” the assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Choudhary was quoted in a local daily.

In the beginning only the Question Hour will be telecast. He said the assembly has decided to assign this task to Doordarshan and not any private television channel for there is “a limited scope of installing only one to two cameras inside the assembly”.

It needs to be reacled that a decision for the live telecast of the proceedings of state assemblies was taken some time back at a national conference of presiding officers in New Delhi. The arrangements discussed there included studios and technical infrastructure or a separate channel for each state assembly.

However, the Speaker said that it would have entailed a huge expenditure of about Rs 12 crore and we are not in a position to invest such a huge money. He said arrangements for a separate studio and related infrastructure could be made once the new building of the Bihar assembly comes up.

The new building of the assembly is scheduled to be constructed on a 1.5-lakh-sq feet land just behind the present assembly building.

Though several MLAs believe that the behaviour of the legislators would undergo a sea change the truth is that it is too early to say anything on the issue. The behaviour of the MPs in Parliament remain more or less the same and last July some BJP MPs, broke all the norms, when they put money bags on the table of the Speaker without even seeking his permission to do so.
