Patna, (Bihar Times): Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi highlighted the development measures undertaken by Bihar, including improvement in education, healthcare facilities, reservation for women at panchayat level, large scale appointment of teachers along with attracting investment.
Addressing the seventh Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), India's annual convention to connect with its diaspora, in Chennai on Friday, he said the government has already appointed 2,020,000 teachers and will be appointing over 80,000 more teachers this year taking the total number of teachers appointed in the last three years to 300,000. “We will also revive the lost glory of Nalanda University through overseas partnership,” he said.
He said the government was implementing systems whereby citizens could demand information under the Right to Information Act through landline and mobile phones.
Appealing to the Persons of Indian Origins (PIOs) and NRIs to invest in sectors like food processing, he said the state is the largest exporter of maize. He reminded the gathering that the country’s first sugar mill was set up in Bihar 105 years ago and there is still lot of scope for sugar industries in the state.
However, he painted a rather negative picture when he referred to his state as being “one of the most backward states of India”. But he also explained the trials and tribulations of the state’s people through two years of flooding.
He also pointed out the success of Bihar model in empowering women, which he said was now being copied by other states.
Modi, who also holds the post of finance minister, said Japan, Thailand, Singapore and China were cooperating in a scheme to develop youth in Bihar.
