Bihar Police fails to recommend name for President’s Medal

Patna, (Bihar Times): Thanks to the delay on the part of the police headquarter this year again no policeman from Bihar will get the President’s Medal on the occasion of the Republic Day. The police headquarters took its own time to recommend the names to the state home department. Surprisingly, this is the second time in three years that the President Medals eluded Bihar Police just because of its own inefficiency.

According to reports Director General (OSD), J K Khanna and IG (Provisions), Ravindra Kumar, were recommended for the President’s Medals for Distinguished Service. Some other names were considered for the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service.

The home department sent the names to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs only last week when the time was already over. The list reached Delhi on January 12, eight days after the meeting of the board comprising director generals of central police organizations and two senior DGs of different states. The meeting to discuss the matter took place on January 4.

Reports also said that it is unlikely that the board would meet again just to discuss Bihar’s case. It would be the third time that the Bihar Police would be denied the Medals. In 2003 and 2006 the state home department delayed the dispatch to the list to the Centre. The culprit this time was the D N Gautam-led state police headquarters.

In all 125 medals for Distinguished Service and 820 for Meritorious Service are distributed across the country on the eve of the Republic Day and Independence Day each year.

In Bihar normally two officers, and on a few occasions a maximum of four are considered for the Distinguished Service.

That Bihar Police could not get any Medal for the second time in three years is a pointer to the state of affairs in the state bureaucracy and police.
