Bihar top in spending under PMGSY this year

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar has spent highest amount in the first six months of the current financial year under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). At the same time the state reported the maximum number of complaints received in the last three years on the quality of new PMGSY roads. They account for 130 of the total 402 complaints.

According to the Union ministry of rural development figures, Bihar spent Rs 970 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana between April 1 and September 30. The data was issued in response to a Parliament Question earlier this week.
PMGSY, a centrally sponsored scheme, was launched by the Centre to build tarred roads connecting villages with state highways. PMGSY has been allotted around Rs 8,000 crore in the current fiscal year.
Bihar has spent 90 per cent of the total Rs 1,067 crore released to it under the scheme so far. Madhya Pradesh got Rs 855 crore, around 80 per cent of which has been utilized. In the last few years Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa have spent the most on rural roads.
Of the total target of 4,644 km of rural roads in 2010-11, Bihar constructed only about 1,000 km.
The rise in expenditure under PMGSY in the six months has something to do with the election too as the parties wanted to cash in on it.
