Patna,(BiharTimes): The Patna team of Indian Express got Rajasthan Patrika’s KC Kulish International Award 2009 for the story done on harassment of RTI activists in Bihar.
The team got award for excellence in print journalism under “Merit Awards” category along with six other newspaper groups. |
Express’ Bihar team leader Santosh Singh, Patna-based special correspondent with the newspaper, and photographer Paras Nath got the award for its story “42 harassed, many in jail” under the award theme for year 2009 “Inclusive Development”.
The Indian Express carried the story about people harassed and jailed for seeking information under RTI in Bihar on November 6, 2009.
It was only after this story that Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had set up special team at its RTI call centre, Jankari, to look into such complaints. The winning teams will be given medals and certificates at a function in New Delhi next month.
The New Crusading Guide, a Ghana-based newspaper got the main award for its stories “Undercover inside Ghana’s madhouse and undercover inside Chinese sex mafia”. Los Angeles-based newspaper La Opinion got the Rajasthan Patrika’s award for its story “Prisoners of ignorance and tradition” under Merit Award category. Pakistan’s Daily Jung Mir got the award for its story “Missing person of Balochistan”. Hindustan, Lucknow, Hindustan Times, New Delhi and Malyalam Manorama, Kottayam were other awardees.
Rajasthan Patrika’s deputy editor Bhuwanesh Jain said in an emailed press release: “The award, set up in memory of Patrika group’s founder – Karpoor Chandra Kulish, recognizes outstanding work of team of journalists published in newspapers consistent with the theme”. The jury included Gloria Brown Anderson, vice president (International and editorial development), news service division of New York Times, S Gurumurthy, corporate advisor and journalist besides others.
