02/07/2010 Sarvodaya leader on indefinite fast to press for distribution of Bhoodan land Patna,(BiharTimes): Noted Gandhian and Sarvodaya leader Baburao Chandawar has been on indefinite fast at Gandhi Samarak Nidhi near Congress Maidan since June 26 to press for the distribution of nine lakh acres of Bhoodan land among the landless peasants. He sat on fast only after his repeated request to distribute Bhoodan land and provide possession to the landless fell on deaf ears of the Nitish Kumar government. On Wednesday a large number of activists took out a Citizens’ March from Gandhi Maidan to support his fast. Prominent among those who took part in the rally were Raghupati, Father Manthra, Arshad Ajmal, Rupesh and host of others. His supporters in the Sampoorna Kranti Andolan Sahyogi Manch, are lending him support. Leaders from various political parties have been visiting the aging leader everyday to extend support to the cause of the displaced peasants of the state. They include LJP president Ram Vilas Paswan, Rajya RJD MPs Jabir Hussain, Ram Kripal Yadav and Raghuvansh Prasad Singh. Raghuvansh Singh, in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urged him to intervene and ensure distribution of Bhoodan land to the landless peasants. The RJD and CPI have even extended all-out support to Chandawar’s cause. The revenue and land reforms minister, Bihar, Narendra Narayan Yadav called on him on June 29. The minister said the state government has agreed to the three major demands of Chandawar, and requested him to break his indefinite fast. Janata Dal United Rajya Sabha MP Shivanand Tiwary also paid a visit to him. Baburao Chandawar, 76, who originally hails from Maharashtra, received lathi when police cane-charged a rally of late Jaya Prakash Narayan during the 1974 movement. He has been involved in the land struggle in his home state since late 1950s.
