Hindu scholars from Bihar taught Arabic to Aurangzeb
Patna,(BiharTimes): Indian sub-continent has produced several scholars of Arabic as it has the earliest major centres of Arabic learning. The tradition has been further enriched during the past several centuries.
This was stated by the former head of Arabic department, Aligarh Muslim University, Prof Abdul Bari in a lecture delivered in Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library on Sunday.
He said that in 8th and 9th centuries AD, scholars from Sindh and western Punjab used to travel to the Arab world where they made a major contribution to Arabic language as well as Islamic theology.
He said that scholars from Bihar taught Mughal princes and princesses. For example Mulla Mohan was a teacher of Aurangzeb for over two decades while Mulla Jeewan was the teacher of Princess Zebun Nisa, his sister. Qazi Muhibullah taught Dara Shikoh. Mulla Mohan and Qari Muhibullah were from Bihar.
He highlighted the contributions of Syed Sulaiman Nadvi, Maulana Mohammad Ali Mungeri, Maulana Monazir Ahsan Gilani and Shauq Nimvi––all from Bihar––who made valuable contributions to the language in the last century.
Former VC of Mazharul Haq Arabic and Persian University Sharf-e-Alam presided and library director Imtiaz Ahmad introduced the subject.
Prof Abdul Bari’s talk was a part of series on Bihar’s history and heritage organized by the Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library.
