Supreme Court notice to Bihar govt on teachers’ retirement

Patna(BiharTimes): The Supreme Court on Monday served notices on the Bihar government in the matter involving increase in retirement age of university and college teachers from 62 to 65 years. The state government has been asked to file its reply within four weeks.
Justice B Sudarshan Reddy and Justice Nijjar served the notice after admitting a bunch of SLPs filed by recently retired teachers.
The same bench fixed August 16 as the next date for hearing in another case filed by the Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University Retired Teachers Association.
The teachers have challenged the order of the division bench of the Patna high court, which had earlier set aside the order of the single judge bench in the matter.
It must be recalled that the single judge bench had earlier ruled in favour of increase in retirement age of teachers to 65 years, as per the recommendations of the UGC.
Incidentally, on the basis of the order of the single bench many teachers continued on their posts even after completing 62 years of age for months.
However, the state government later challenged the order saying it was its prerogative to increase the retirement age and that it was not bound by the UGC recommendations.
