According to reports for MLA’s henchmen chased a group of Dalits while they were cultivating their fields on Thursday morning. When the Dalits retaliated, the musclemen fired indiscriminately.
The killing was an outcome of an old dispute between Dalits and the landlord’s family. The government had in 1952 seized more than 300 acres of land from Singh’s ancestors, who were the landlords of the area.
Relatives of the victims alleged that the former MLA was present during the clash. The police arrested Ramanuj Singh, private assistant to Krishna Chandra Singh.
The villagers still have parchas (documents) for the land given to them by the district administration.
An FIR has been lodged with Pipariya police station by one Arjun Rai of Pathua, in which Singh with 20 persons were named. Another 150 persons were accused of firing at the villagers.
The area where the firing incident occurred is situated 15 km from Lakhisarai district headquarters and is almost on the border of Begusarai.
Singh’s men also lodged a complaint about two missing persons––Shanker Singh and Arvind Singh.
Pathua is an EBC and SC dominated village, where around 900 farmers were given over 1,400 acres of land. The land has become a bone of contention between the villagers of Pathua and the neighbouring upper-caste Walipur village.
Bihar has witnessed sudden rise in uib, this is the third instance of violence against Dalits in a month. Just last week, Babulal Ram, a Scheduled Caste man in his 50s was beaten to death by three upper caste men...
