Centre rules out ban on opinion polls

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Union government on Friday made it clear that it was not going to issue an ordinance to ban the telecast and publication of opinion polls in theBihar.

The Election Commission request came after Star News and another media house telecast and subsequently published opinion poll surveys showing clear lead to the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance in Bihar. The opinion poll was telecast on October 18, that is, only three days before the start of the first phase of poll on October 21.

According to reports from Delhi the Law Ministry did not deem it fit for the government to issue ordinance so close to the Winter Session of Parliament, which is to start on November 9.

As reported earlier the Commission’s secretary K F Wilfred, in a letter to the Law Ministry, had asked that an ordinance be issued to amend the existing law on opinion polls. His letter said that it is “extremely desirable” that the law on the subject is amended urgently by issuing an ordinance.

The Commission was of the view that opinion polls often prejudice the minds of the voters, thus they should be banned.
