Huge Fall In Bihar’s Growth Rate: Why Are Govt, Media Silent?

Patna,(BiharTimes): No state in Indian history witnessed such a great fall in the growth rate in just one year––from 16.59 per cent in 2008-09 to 4.72 per cent in 2009-10, that is, from first position to 14th.

So when Bihar registered the highest growth rate a year before everyone in the country––from columnists to economists––wrote articles to applaud the state government However, a couple of scholars did question the figure even then.

Now when the state saw such a sharp decline in the growth rate there is no one to explain the reason. People in government will obviously not highlight it in the election year, but what about the independent media and the experts. Save Prof Nawal Kishore Chaudhary of Department of Economics, Patna University, who highlighted this aspect in a TV discussion, no one dared to talk on the issue.

He openly asked the state government why the latest Economic Survey of Bihar, which incidentally came out after the presentation of the state budget, did not carry this figure. Even none of the political leaders asked about this glaring omission.

Surprisingly, the media completely blacked-out this news for the reason best known to them, though the story on the fall in the growth rate was done by none else but the PTI from New Delhi on August 29.

One possible reason for this fall is decline in the agriculture growth by -17 per cent in the last financial year.

However, whatever is the reason for this decline should at least be made public, debated and discussed in the open forums like media. After all Bihar evokes much more interest now. Break the silence please.

I have gone through the comments. Most of the experts are of the view that agriculture sector is the culprit. Even if this is the case why is government mum on the recommendations of State Farmers Commission under chairmanship of Ramadhar babu. Similarly the government is sitting on the recommendations of Bandopadhayay committee. Why it is so if agriculture is the backbone is known to nitisshji only? But why is main stream media silent over GDP fiasco news. It should be brought into the public domain particularly so this being the election year. Actually nitishji is indeed very good media manager. The people of bihar will teach him a lesson this time. He has broght education to mess by contracting the teacher rather than appointing teachers on the basis of competition and many more malaises.
