Proposal to confer honorary degree on Nitish: Gaya DM asks VC to explain
Patna,(BiharTimes) The district magistrate-cum-district returning officer of Gaya, Sanjay Kumar Singh, on Saturday said he has issued a show-cause notice to Magadh University Vice-chancellor Arvind Kumar seeking to explain whether the decision to confer honorary degree on the chief minister, Nitish Kumar, was violative of the model code of conduct or not.
According to him further action would be taken after receiving reply from the VC.
It needs to be recalled that the MU had, at a meeting of principals of all the 44 constituent colleges, on September 8 proposed to confer doctorate on Nitish and Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar, besides Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in recognition of their services in the fields of education and society.
The date of the assembly election was announced on September 6.
It needs to be mentioned that the Nitish Kumar government strongly objected to the appointment of Arvind Kumar as the Vice Chancellor of Magadh University by the Chancellor-cum-Governor, Devanand Konwar, last April. It led to war of words between the state government and Raj Bhawan. On September 8 the same VC chaired a meeting on conferring honorary degree on the chief minister.
