Bihar's Natha finally succumbs to injuries

Patna,(BiharTimes): When Peepli Live was making waves in Patna and elsewhere in the country a Natha-type instigation by friends and colleagues led to the self-immolation bid by Patna Municipal Corporation employee, Dayanand Ram, on Wednesday. Unlike Natha, who refused to be carried away notwithstanding instigation, Ram poured kerosene on his body and lit a match on Wednesday. On Sunday he died silently, with little media hype. Even in this election season opposition politicians failed to make it a big issue.

Dayanand took the extreme step because like him many other Patna Municipal Corporation employees had not been paid their salaries for nine months. On Thursday, a day after he committed this act the PMC released the salary. But Rs 30,000 odd salary of nine months of this daily wage employee is never enough for the price he and his family had to pay.

According to PMC Commissioner Shreedar Chiruveli the Corporation is never short of funds when it came to the payment of salaries or wage of these men. Still in this so-called susashan (good governance) he had to sacrifice his life just to get the very small due amount.

As reported the State Human Rights Commission had taken the matter seriously and had sought a detailed report from Patna Senior Superintendent of Police B S Meena and PMC Commissioner. Commission chairman Justice (retired) S N Jha had asked the police to explain as to how did Ram immolate himself when the police had all the information about the programme. The police have been asked to identify the lapses, if any, on their part.

The police were scanning the videotapes of the television channels to ascertain as to whether someone had poured kerosene on Ram and set him on fire or whether he had done so on his own.
