Census 2011: Rohtas tops in literacy rate, Purnea occupies bottom position

Patna,(BiharTimes): Though Bihar's population growth rate has dipped by 3.45 per cent to 25.07 per cent in 2011 from 28.62 per cent a decade ago the state’s population has reached 10.38 crores mark. Notwithstanding the decline in the growth rate the density of the state has increased from 881 to 1102 in the last 10 years.

Giving this information to the media Census Director Senthil Kumar said on Monday that Rohtas district has the highest (75.59 per cent) literacy rate while Purnea with 52.49 per cent has the lowest. Earlier this position was held by the Muslim-dominated Kishanganj but this district seems to have made some improvement.
With 1882 Sheohar district has the highest population density in the state while Kaimur with 488 has the lowest density.
As reported earlier the overall gender ratio in the state has declined from 921 to 916 female per 1000 males but the child gender ratio (the age group of 0-6 years), has come down to 933 in 2011 as against 942 in 2001. Thus Bihar is one of the rarest states which witnessed fall in both the overall gender ratio and child gender ratio. This has caused alarm in the governmental sector and put a question mark before various government schemes in the direction of health and empowerment of women.

Gopalganj has registered the highest gender ratio with 1015 female against 1000 males in 2011, while Bhagalpur and Munger districts have recorded the lowest gender ratio at 879 females per 1000 males. Incidentally Munger tops in the female literacy rate which stands at 65.53 per cent.
Rohtas has the highest male literacy rate at 85.29 per cent.

The highest gender ratio in child population category has been recorded by Nawada district at 985 females per 1000 males but Vaishali has the lowest gender ratio at 894.

Twenty out of 37 districts have recorded higher literacy percentage than the state's average literacy rate at 63.82.
