Patna,(BiharTimes): Patna office, which includes Bihar and Jharkhand, got the third slot so far the growth in Income Tax collection in 2010-11 is concerned. The figure grew by 29.1% and collections stood at Rs 4,117 crore. |
Ahmedabad had recorded the highest growth at 37.9% with collection at Rs 14,473 crore, followed by Lucknow where collections grew by 29.7% at Rs 3744 crore.
Though Nagpur was fourth in terms of growth, in absolute terms its rank came down from 17th in the last two fiscals to 18th this year.
There are in all 19 offices in the country. But there is nothing exceptional about Patna. In the last three years smaller centres have shown sharp growth in collections. In 2009, Kochi had topped with 35.6% growth and in following year, Guwahati got the top slot by posting a massive 66% growth.
Even the backward region of Vidarbha performed well. Contrast this with Mumbai, the commercial capital, that came in eighth with just 18.6% growth in collection. This may be because it has reached a saturation point.
However, in absolute terms the amount it contributed was highest at Rs 1,47,947 crore. The higher collection from places like Patna, Guwahati, Lucknow, Nagpur etc may be indicative of incomes rising faster in smaller towns reflecting better distribution of economic benefits.
