Patna,(BiharTimes): Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Tuesday called the appointment of six VCs and several pro-VCs as illegal as the panel does not contain any of the names recommended by the state government.

Even as the state government is trying its level best to clip the wings of the Chancellor of the Universities of Bihar, the Raj Bhawan on Monday appointed VCs for six out of eight universities. These posts have been lying vacant for the last many months.
The Governor, however, did not appoint the VCs for the Magadh and Veer Kuer Singh Universities. The VCs of these two universities were removed following the Patna High Court order last May.
Even as Modi and Human Resources Development Minister P K Shahi, openly criticizing the Governor's action a couple of VCs, including that of the Patna University, Shambhu Nath Singh, took charge on Tuesday.
Interestingly, Lal Keshwar Prasad Singh, the Principal of Patna College, who was appointed as pro-VC of Patna University, is the husband of Usha Sinha, the JD(U) MLA from Hilsa in Nalanda district.
Though the two Bihar ministers charged that the appointments have been made by the Governor Devanand Konwar without mandatory consultation with the state government sources close to Raj Bhawan claimed that the decision was taken after a consensus was reached between the Governor and government.
What is more surprising is that the appointment came only a fortnight after July 17 prolong meeting between chief minister Nitish Kumar and Governor.
Incidentally, Shahi was kept away from such an important meeting though he accompanied the chief minister to Raj Bhawan. This raised eyebrows in the political circle as some suspected that a compromise formula had been reached between the two.
