Darbhanga doctor comes out with simple way to get arsenic-free water

Patna,(BiharTimes): When Bihar government has launched big projects to purify water from arsenic a senior doctor of Darbhanga has come out with a simple solution.
Dr Mohan Mishra, former Professor of Medicine at Darbhanga Medical College Hospital, has identified alum, commonly known as phitkiri, as a purifier that could remove arsenic content from ground water almost completely and make it fit for drinking.

Arsenic content in water, especially in the districts along river Ganga has claimed hundreds of lives in Bihar in last several years. Besides, it has caused physical deformity too. Disclosing his research to the mediapersons in Darbhanga Dr Mishra said that when he applied alum to ten sources of water collected from different sources in the arsenic affected villages of Bairampur and Parri villages in Darbhanga district it removed arsenic contamination to an undetectable limit.

He said that the potash alum destroys arsenic content and certain other impurity in water and itself gets diluted. It is very cheap and affordabale and treating a litre of water would cost just about two or three paise.

Dr Mishra’s research study is available on ResearchGate, a US websiste, where scientists from all over the world post their findings and research works. The research outcome is particularly significant as Mishra had followed international paratmeter of the permissible limit of arsenic presence, that is, .01 mg litre to establish the purity of water.

He however cautioned that one should adopt this technic only after getting the water tested at reliable lab before and after purification.
