Centre’s package to Bengal, not Bihar, anger Nitish, Sushil Modi

.Patna,(BiharTimes): A package of Rs 21,614 crore to Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal and not anything to Bihar by the UPA Government had first angered the deputy chief minister and then the chief minister of Bihar.

On Sunday Sushil Kumar Modi charged the Manmohan Singh government with adopting step-motherly treatment towards Bihar. He said the Bihar government did not have any objection to the Centre’s package to Bengal but accused that the Centre had deliberately been ignoring Bihar’s long-pending demand for the special category status and special package.

A day later on Monday Nitish Kumar also said that his government had no problems with other states receiving packages for development, but it was painful when the Centre adopted a different yardstick for Bihar to deny its rightful demand for additional funds or packages.

Charging the Centre with ignoring the plight of the people of flood-hit Kosi region he said the state government had to obtain loan from the World Bank for rehabilitation works.

Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of Janata Darbar he said the Centre had not yet considered demand for refund of Rs 1,000 crore spent on the construction of the National Highways, financial package for development and conferment of special category state status.

The chief minister said that the Centre had referred the issue of the special package to the inter-ministerial group instead of taking up the issue at the National Development Council (NDC).
