According to reports from the United States these meetings were arranged by Ravi Verma, Chairman, Bihar Foundation, West Coast Chapter, the United States.
Prof Bhowmick is trying to attract talented research scholars from the US universities to join IIT Patna as faculty members.
The report also said that he is also setting up partnership with the premier institutes for exchange at the level of students and faculty members. Under this partnership arrangement selected faculty members from IIT Patna will work with a peer faculty members at University of California, Berkeley or Stanford University. As collaborators, they will exchange research ideas and teaching methods. The partnership will also facilitate visits by California academicians to Patna and IIT Patna faculty to California.
IIT Patna Director also discussed the latest developments in the area of technical and management education. Stanford University has made major changes in how students choose a particular area for specialization. The students at Stanford are encouraged to explore several disciplines of technology and management before settling down on a specific field for specialization. This approach allows the students to choose an area of specialization that truly holds their interest.
Ravi Verma found this approach radically different from the way disciplines are assigned to IIT entrants. At the IITs, an area of specialization is assigned to the students right at the beginning with very little room for change later. There is a risk of a student getting in an area in which he or she has no natural interest.
