Bihar seeks 200 procurement centres of FCI

Patna,(BiharTimes): In view of the bumper paddy crop the Bihar government has urged the Centre to open 200 paddy procurement centres of the Food Corporation of India (FCI). Last year the FCI had opened 90 centres. So far this year it has opened 80 centres.

State’s food and consumer protection minister Shyam Rajak raised the demands at a meeting of food ministers and agriculture secretaries of states in New Delhi on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by Union minister of state for food and public distribution, K V Thomas.

Rajak also raised the issue of scarcity of technical personnel in the FCI and said their absence at the centres was adversely affecting the procurement work.

He told the meeting that the state government had taken steps for purchasing paddy directly from farmers and procurement would not be allowed by traders or intermediaries at any procurement centre.

As reported earlier by BiharTimes the state government had fixed a target of 30 lakh metric tonnes for procurement of which FCI has been given the target to procure five lakh metric tonnes whereas BSFC and PACSs have been given the target of seven lakh and 18 lakh metric tonnes respectively.
