Patna,(BiharTimes): Unlike in the past so many years blankets in Bihar, if the officials are to be believed, would be distributed among the poor people not before the end of February.
According to reports Social Welfare Department (SWD) has now finalized a proposal for distribution of blankets among the poor at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. |
The proposal is still awaiting cabinet approval. It is estimated that blankets will be provided to merely 23,000 people, when the number of those who badly need them is many times more. In fact several social groups and individuals have already distributed thousands of blankets in the last few weeks all over the state. The sum of Rs 50 lakh is grossly inadequate to meet the demand.
Sources said that the proposal has been returned to Social Welfare Department with some suggestions for incorporation. Since the purchase of blankets would take its own time it would not be possible for the poor to get them before the end of February. This is possible when the cabinet gives its nod immediately.
Officials concede that usually distribution of blankets is over by Makar Sankranti, that is before January 14. But now the government has woken up much late.
What is more funny is the price of blanket fixed by the state government last year. It was just Rs 150 per piece, when good blankets cost something between Rs 225 and 250 or even more. However, now the price ceiling has been removed.
