Patna,(BiharTimes): A single-member Commission of Inquiry, set up in accordance with the recommendation of Chief Justice of Patna High Court, will probe into the Forbesganj firing incident.
Retired Patna High Court Judge Madhavendra Sharan has taken the charge as the Chairman of the Judicial Inquiry Commission to probe the June 3 firing in Bhajanpura village under Forbesganj sub-division of Araria district. |
The announcement of the name came a day before the visit of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Forbesganj, where he met the family members of the victims and other people.
According to Home Secretary Amir Subhani, who is also the principle secretary of Minority Welfare Department, the probe had now started. He said the Commission would submit its report within six months. It would inquire into the background and the circumstances that led to the occurrence of the incident and it would also inquire into the sequence of events and the role of the people concerned.
He said the Commission would probe the justification of the firing by the police.
He once again reiterated the state government’s stand that until the judicial probe report comes, it can not announce compensation to the victims. The government wants that the entire picture should come clear.
So far compensation to the relatives of the infant killed in the firing is concerned, it is a different matter because laws applicable to adults were not applicable to children. There is a separate Juvenile Justice Act for children below 14 years of age, the Home Secretary added.
He said the state government had asked for a sitting judge to probe into the incident but because of non-availability of a judge, a retired judge was assigned the task.
The opposition parties, however, have been demanding probe by the CBI or a sitting judge of the Patna High Court and have strongly denounced the state government’s stand of not paying compensation to those who died in the firing.
