Patna,(BiharTimes): The Medical Council of India (MCI) on Thursday gave green signal to Patna-based 450-bed Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) to start MBBS course from the current academic session.
With 100 seats, it would be the first autonomous health institute in Bihar. |
Infrastructure-wise the IGIMS has better facilities than several medical colleges of the state. According to sources the MCI sent the letter of permission to IGIMS through an e-mail on Thursday. The letter says that the “permission would be renewed annually on verification of achievement of annual target set in the project report submitted by the institution”.
The process of annual renewal of permission would continue till the establishment of the medical college and expansion of hospital facilities were completed as per the norms of the MCI.
A separate national level pre-medical test would be conducted soon as the MCI guidelines said that the admission process has to be completed by August 30. The selection for the MBBS students for this academic session for other medical colleges of the state has already been completed.
Bihar has already been facing acute shortage of doctors, both in teaching and in government hospitals.

Good news indeed yet to be entertained with caution. How about developing labs & teachers in basic science! I am afraid teachers will be pushed into IGIMS on the basis of 'pairavi' compromising with quality or part time teachers from Patna & Nalanda Medical colleges (already starving for more teachers) will be deputed. At present as well,IGIMS & IGIC besides
RMIMS and the new Medical colleges in Bihar do not have regular teachers, even the Principals of the newly started Medical colleges are allowed to administer from Patna.
