Bihar to launch linking of rivers projects

Patna,(BiharTimes): To solve the recurrent problem of flood and to stream line the irrigation system the state government will soon launch an ambitious plan to link intra-basin rivers.
According to the Principal Secretary Water Resource Department Afzal Amanullah the first such project envisages linking of the Burhi Gandak with Noon, Baya and Ganga rivers. It would start by mid of financial year 2011-12. The total estimated cost for the project is above Rs four billion.

Water Resources Minister Vijay Chaudhary was quoted in the media as saying that the pre-feasibility report for the project is ready and a Detailed Project Report is being prepared by the National Water Development Authority.

This would be followed by the linking of Kosi and Mechi rivers which will create additional irrigation facilities in Supaul, Saharsa, Araria, Kishanganj and Purnia districts. A sum of Rs 4441.82 crore would be spent on the scheme.

About a decade ago the Centre government planned a massive project for linking of inter-basin rivers. However, the project has virtually been shelved following strong protest by water resources experts and environmentalists.
