Patna,(BiharTimes): Yet another example of the way the government machinery is working in Bihar.
A convict who was brought to Patna for treatment escaped late on Thursday evening not from the Prisoners’ Ward of the Patna Medical College and Hospital, where he was supposed to be kept, but from a hotel opposite it in Govind Mitra Road. |
Forty-year old Amit Mandal was put up along with his family in a hotel. The six policemen, who came all the way from Munger, also stayed at the same floor of the hotel.
Amit was lodged in Munger jail for offences committed under the Arms Act. He was brought to the state capital on June 9 for treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital.
He was accompanied by four constables and two havildars. It remains a mystery as to why was he put up in a hotel when there is no such provision for the convicted criminals.
They all checked into Janta Hotel, located at Govind Mitra Road on the afternoon of June 9.
What is strange is that while Mandal was put up in Room Number 307 his wife Guria Devi, mother Sita Devi and two children got 306 while the policemen occupied Room No. 301.
Now reports said that when on Thursday evening the light of the hotel went off. Mandal started shouting, saying he was feeling uneasy. One of the policemen went to his room, took off his handcuffs and took him to the gallery outside where he could get fresh air.
If the police version is to be believed Mandal managed to give a slip when one of the cops who brought him outside came to Room No. 301 to call his colleagues. As it was pitch dark Mandal took advantage of it and fled.
This incident came within a fortnight of the killing of a doctor by jail inmates inside the Gopalganj Jail. It is another example of how bad things are in the prisons and how bold the prisoners have become in the state.
