Orissa leaves Bihar behind in taking action against corrupt officer

Patna,(BiharTimes): For a change it is the Orissa government which on Monday confiscated properties worth crores of rupees, allegedly obtained through fraudulent means, by a retired IAS officer. This is the first such seizure in that state under the Orissa Special Courts Act, 2006.

Reports from Bhubaneswar said that among other things the State Vigilance Department confiscated a double-storey building, a farmhouse and nine plots belonging to Ramesh Chandra Behera, a 1979-batch IAS officer.

Though the Orissa Act came several years back it could not be implemented due to legal wrangles. The Act allows confiscation of properties of corrupt officials and ministers before trial begins. It was only after Orissa that Bihar made a similar law.
