Number of poor rising, acknowledges Bihar government

 

Patna,(BiharTimes): Sounds somewhat unbelieveable, nevertheless true. The number of poor in Bihar is rising causing concern in social, economic and political circles.

Replying to a short notice question in the Bihar Assembly on Wednesday, rural development minister Nitish Mishra, admitted that the total population under the BPL in the state in 2007 was 1,13,40,990 which has increased to 1,26,61,632, which is 57.63 per cent of the population. In the most backward Kishanganj district over 79 per cent people fall under BPL.

To a supplementary question of Amrendra Pratap Singh of BJP he said that the government has launched various schemes to provide relief to the poor families. He said that the rural development department is providing Rs 45,000 to each homeless BPL family.

However, in the six Naxal-hit districts of Gaya, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Arwal and Jamui this amount has been increased to Rs 48,500. In the current financial year, this facility was provided to 9,43,725 families of which 4,53,555 houses have been constructed, the minister informed.

Leader of opposition in the State Assembly, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, asked as to why the number of poor is rising so much in the last few years when the government is making tall claim of fast growth rate.
