Patna,(BiharTimes): Geography teaching in Patna University (PU) was started by a Professor of Physics in the year 1927. He continued to teach Geography till 1937 when the University finally got a full-fledged teacher in the name of Prof S C Chatterjee. Even the latter shifted to PU Geology Department sometimes later. |
Giving this information at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of PU Geography Department here on Sunday, Head of the Department, R B P Singh, said that even though Post-Graduate teaching of Geography started in PU in 1949, at Under-Graduate stage, the teaching of the subject was started at Patna College in 1927 by a Physics teacher, Sharad Chandra Sinha.
During the Sixth Plan period the Department got necessary funds from the UGC for establishing a Centre for Development Studies.
Prof Singh said that in the 11th plan, the Department was selected by the UGC under its special assistance programme. In its Diamond Jubilee year, the Department is also going to have a full-fledged Weather Observatory sanctioned by the Indian Meteorological Department.
