Patna,(BiharTimes): The state government is going to introduce Bills for amendments in the Patna University and Bihar Universities Amendment Acts in the state Assembly in the current Budget Session, which is scheduled to be adjourned sine die on March 30.

The amendments, which already got a nod of the state cabinet on Thursday, aim to clip the wings of the Governor-cum-Chancellor of the state universities, most of them going without any full-time VC for the last couple of months.
There is general impression among academics that the amendments would make the officials powerful and weaken the Vice Chancellors too. The state government had been struggling to find a way out to end the showdown with the Raj Bhavan over the appointment of VCs.
HRD minister P K Shahi recently called on the Chancellor Debanand Konwar to discuss the issue, but the the latter avoided bringing it in the talks which last for more than two and a half hours. Earlier chief minister Nitish Kumar had also met him but to no avail.
On Thursday’s cabinet meeting the HRD department reportedly came out with a suggestion to curtail the authority of the Chancellor in appointment of VCs and other affairs of the universities. The department has suggested having search committees for recommending a panel of names to be considered for appointment as VCs.
