Patna,(BiharTimes): The Bihar government has invited three IIT-Kharagpur alumni to make their presentation on their cost-effective, innovative technology in breach-resistant earthen bund for river Kosi at the Water Resources Development department on May 4.
The three are T K Choudhary, Civil Engineer and River Management specialist, Mihir Biswas, Mechanical Engineer, and Somnath Ghosh, former HoD, Civil Engineering, IIT-Kharagpur. |
They have developed a technology which ensures cent per cent success in preventing breaches in bunds. As silting is a major problem with most Himalayan rivers, application of this technology would prove extremely useful to tame floods.
According to reports Prof Biswas had approached Bihar chief secretary about breach-resistant bund for the Kosi last month. This technology is said to be cost-effective.
The river bed of Kosi, according to experts, is at a higher level than the adjoining area. Therefore, construction of a breach-resistant bund is the only solution to ensure safety from periodic floods.
It is because of this reason that Kosi causes devastating flood quite regularly, the last one in August 2008, which led to the displacement of 33 lakh people. It swept away thousands of human being and cattle.
It is Prof Choudhary, who developed this innovative technology. His technical paper was published in the May 2006 issue of the Civil Engineering Journal of the Institution of Engineers (India). The technology was since approved by IIT-Kharagpur.
Prof Choudhary got extensive experience as a senior engineer with Kolkata Port Trust in the management of the Hoogly River estuary at Haldia.
