Patna,(BiharTimes): A single bench of Justice V N Sinha of Patna High Court on Friday declared the election of Janata Dal (United) MP from Jhanjharpur Lok Sabha seat, Mangani Lal Mandal, invalid for failing to furnish information about his first wife and the property owned by her in the affidavit submitted with the nomination papers.

The Court declared election as void while hearing a writ petition filed by a voter, Vishnudeo Bhandari. The latter had alleged that Mandal had not given complete information in the affidavit filed while seeking election in 2009 as required under the Representation of People’s Act (RPA). The 63-year-old MP had been accused of concealing property details of one of his wives in his nomination papers filed during the 2009 general elections.
The High Court found that Mandal had a first wife who also owned property. This amounted to suppression of facts.
Incidentally, Janata Dal (United) had moved the Speaker for the disqualification of Mandal and two other Lok Sabha MPs as they indulged in anti-party activities during the 2010 Assembly election. The hearing of the case under the Anti-Defection Law was pending.
Mandal has two wives––Sunita Devi and Arti Mandal. The MP, however, submitted the details of assets and liabilities only of second one, Arti Mandal, in his affidavit to the Election Commission, while concealing the same of Sunita, his first wife.
