Patna,(BiharTimes): Students of the two-year-old Central University of Bihar are virtually on the streets with the expiry of September 30 deadline by the Birla Institute of Technology. The latter had sent eviction notice to the CUB sometimes back. The only saving grace is that at the moment all the institutions are close for Durga Puja.

But CUB is not the only institute facing such an unpleasant situation. Even Maulana Mazhar-ul-Haque Arabic-Persian University is facing a similar threat.
As reported earlier the Central University of Bihar (CUB) was established by an Act of Parliament in 2009. It has been functioning from the rented accommodation at BIT-Mesra ever since its establishment as the State government refused to allot land to it. The Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has repeatedly said that it would give land only in Motihari and nowhere else.
But the selection committee of the Human Resource Development Ministry rejected the offer on the plea of poor social infrastructure and connectivity.
The CUB VC, Prof Janak Pandey, has repeatedly accused Nitish Kumar of deliberately denying it the land. He said that though no action has been taken after the expiry of deadline a sword is hanging over the head. There is uncertainty among the students as well as teaching and non-teaching staff too.
Media reports from Human Resource Development Ministry in New Delhi suggest that the BIT-Patna was being pressurized by Nitish Kumar-led State government to make it difficult for the University to continue.
Reports also said that the Ministry had already made it clear that if Bihar does not resolve the
issue of land allocation, the Centre may have to allow the university to buy private land for its campus. However, the Ministry wants to avoid this option.
Reports also said that the Ministry is examining whether a part of the IIT-Patna campus could be diverted for the varsity or not. However, no concrete step has so far been taken in this respect.
As reported earlier the Registrar of the Central University, Mohammad Nehal, received the eviction notice on August 18 following which Prof Pandey immediately wrote back to the State
authorities reminding them about the agreement over use of space between the two institutions for which the State had granted no objection certificates. The then Vice Chancellor Emeritus, BIT-Mesra and the Vice Chancellor, CUB had signed an agreement on June 27, 2009 for a space on rent for the University at the BIT campus for two years. As per the agreement, CUB had to pay immediately an advance of Rs 15 lakh for getting access to the portion of the building already completed and to be used by the University.
With Nalanda International University and Off Campus Branch of Aligarh Muslim University already in the news for all the wrong reasons and the state government asking the NIT Patna to vacate the campus as it wants to revive the Bihar College of Engineering the state is heading for a unique type of campus tussle.
Academics, social activists, and not to speak of opposition parties, squarely blame the state government for the present mess.
