According to Gaya Airport Director Samar Kumar Biswas the light was stolen sometimes in 2009. They were reinstalled but again stolen. However, efforts are on to reinstalled them as more and more flights are now landing in Gaya, he added.
The problem cropped up on Monday (October 3) after the late afternoon Delhi-Gaya-Varanasi-Delhi Air India flight got delayed. The flight had to be cancelled causing a lot of inconvenience to 12 incoming passengers from New Delhi and 19 passengers who were to board from Gaya.
Gaya district magistrate Vandana Preyasi has now assured the Airports Authority of India of full protection to these lights.
Thai Air, Mihin Lanka and Myanmar Airways already operate international flghts from Gaya while Air India introduced its Delhi-Gaya-Varanasi-Delhi service only on October 1.
Gaya international airport is situated just beside the military cantonment and less than five kilometres from Bodh Gaya. Though Gaya is a Maoist-infested district the airport and its surrounding hills are free from their activities. Thus the authorities rule out the hands of Naxals and hold the thieves responsible for the crime.
