Patna,(BiharTimes): Even as chief minister Nitish Kumar announced several programmes for the teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day retired teachers of Patna University observed Protest Day and staged sit-in to press their charter of demands while the serving teachers observed it as Demand Day.

Protesting under the banner of the Patna University Retired Teachers Association the teachers flayed the government for the denial of their statutory right to pension/family revision as well as the benefit of 50 per cent dearness relief merger with the effect from January 2005.
The teachers criticized the sheer neglect of the government towards the teaching community and shouted slogans like Release Funds for Revised Pension, Stop breach of Promise, Revise Pension, Show Respect to Teachers, Stop Conspiring to Finish University Autonomy and Save Higher Education.
The teachers accused the HRD department of what they said taking an absurd plea that unless an SLP filed in the Supreme Court is disposed of, the finance department would not release fund for pension revision.
As the retired teachers protested the serving teachers observed Teachers’ Day as Demand Day. The call was given by All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organization.
Though celebrations were held at several places in the state on this occasion, Teachers’ Day failed to bring salary to thousands of college and school teachers all over the state. They have not got their salaries for last couple of months.
This notwithstanding the fact that the state government had last month announced that the salary for August would be paid before August 30 because of Eid and Teej on that day.
