Ticket to Assembly: Nitish’s bridal gift to strongman’s newly wedded wife

Patna,(BiharTimes): Last week Bihar witnessed a unique marriage of convenience––even unheard of in the so-called Jungle Raj years. When notorious outlaw Ajay Singh sought ticket for the Assembly by-election for Daraunda seat in Siwan district chief minister Nitish Kumar reportedly put a condition.
“Why do not you get married and I would give ticket to your bride,“ was the suggestion.

This seat was won thrice by Ajay Singh’s mother Jagmato Devi on the Janata Dal (United) ticket. But on June 26 last she died of cardiac arrest at the age of 70.

As it was technically impossible for the party to give ticket to Ajay, who was de facto MLA when his mother was alive, this new idea was proposed.

In no time bride-hunt was on. Kavita Singh was selected from among a bevy of 16 girls. Apart from other criteria it was announced that the would-be bride should have the name in the voters’ list and should have reached the age of 25, which is required for anyone who wants to contest election.

“As per the wish of the raja I got married,” was how Ajay Singh said after the marriage. But his marriage angered many within the family and outside too as it was in a hurry solemnized during Pitripaksha. This is not the auspicious occasion for marriage for Hindus.

Though the by-election is still far away Ajay did not want to waste any time to get ticket. And his bride got the prize ticket.

The moot question being asked is: Was there no other person in the entire Assembly seat whom Nitish could have given ticket? After all Janata Dal (United) is already packed with Munna Shukla, Anant Singh, Sunil Pandey to name just a few. After all, Janata Dal (United) has the rarest distinction of giving ticket to maximum number of candidates with criminal cases pending against them in the last year’s election. But there was a legal hurdle in case with Ajay. Therefore, first the mother and now wife would be his proxy.

However, he denied that he is a bahubali. “All these were cases framed in the past while I was fighting the Jungle Raj. The court has acquitted me in almost all of them,” was how he reacted to media’s query.
Kavita, on her part, said she was not aware before marriage that she would get a ticket for Assembly. “However, I would complete the work left incomplete by my Sasuji (mother-in-law),” she said.
