Blamegame has started with the Deputy Mayor of Patna, Vinay Kumar Pappu, directly accusing the Nitish Kumar government for the mess.
The Bihar Assembly campus has been converted into a lake though a training programme for MLAs and MLCs was organized there on Monday. Speaker Meira Kumar was one of those who attended it.
With most north Bihar rivers in full spate and Sone water already causing floods in large part of south-west Bihar the situation is likely to deteriorate if rains continue for some more time.
Though schools remained open in Patna on Monday they had thin attendance because of waterlogging in most colonies and localities. This is notwithstanding the fact that half-yearly examination is going on in many schools.
As various important roads have been raised by 18 to 20 inches in the past few years waterlogging has become a sort of perennial problem in most of the low-lying colonies of Patna and other towns of the state.
“My son could not go to school because of waterlogging in our colony, Nehru Nagar,” was how a father told BiharTimes. “There is two feet water on the roads in my colony and adjoining areas of Pataliputra Colony. If this is the condition of the prestigious colonies of Patna what could be the situation elsewhere,” he added.
Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Station Road etc present lake like view with vast sheet of water enveloping roads and all the open space.
Even as water entered large number of houses the Deputy Mayor alleged that the Patna Municipal Commissioner had not attended the office for the last 20 days. He accused the state government of deliberately ignoring the people of Patna to shift blame on the civic bodies, the PMC. This, in spite of the fact that the concerned minister himself visited some of the colonies sometimes back.
The irony is that the state government appears to be hardly bothered about the situation. Little effort is being made to pump out water from these colonies.
Patna witnessed 85.4 mm rain since Sunday. As there was scanty rain in Patna urban areas in the last three years residents could not feel the problem caused by the raising of the road. This year for the first time the entire capital is facing a very critical situation. Besides, manholes are still lying open at innumerable places in the state capital.
So far other parts of the state is concerned West Champaran saw 268 mm of rain. Most of the rivers of north Bihar are flowing above the danger level. Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, East Champaran Samastipur, Kaihar, Khagaria, Bhagalpur etc are also facing similar situation.
Many trains on Howrah-Delhi route via Patna or Gaya are running late or have been rescheduled. Similar is the case with trains of North Bihar.
So far seven deaths have been reported from Gaya, Patna and Rohtas. The casualties have been caused by house collapse or uprooting of trees.
