Modi calls on weavers to close their ranks

Patna,(BiharTimes): Call it RJD-isation of BJP or with any other name. The truth is that caste meetings have come to acquire special importance.
Ahead of the election for 11 seats of Legislative Council the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday organized a state-level conference of the delegates of Tanti-Tatwa and Patwa caste groups at Abhiyanta Bhawan in the state capital. And the person who addressed the meeting was the deputy chief minister, Sushil Kumar Modi.

He said separately the number of each of the 120-odd Extremely Backward Castes (EBCs) is not big, but united they make a solid, unassailable body. Remain united as it would protect your collective interests, and also extend your support to the NDA, he added.

Tanti-Tatwa castes fall in the category of weavers, while the Patwa community traditionally make maur (headgears used by bridegrooms during marriage) and other ceremonial items. They have a sizeable population in Gaya, Bhagalpur etc.

As the state BJP is in position to win four out of the 11 seats the party has decided to retain its three MLCs, including deputy CM Modi and legislative council chairman Tara Kant Jha, whose terms are expiring. In this backdrop, there is intense lobbying for the fourth seat.

Meanwhile, the state BJP Weavers’ Morcha chief, Deepak Kumar Tanti, backed by others at the conference, demanded a seat in the Council for the Tanti-Tatwa and Patwa caste groups.

But Modi counselled them to work for the uplift of the community and greater political awareness among them and do not bother too much about becoming MLA or MLC as the queue is too long. He said the BJP was not a factory to produce MLAs and MLCs, but a party that creates dedicated workers.

Modi asked those who attend the meeting to avail the reservation facility in the elections to the panchayati raj institutions (PRIs) and local bodies.

Organizing caste meetings was the hallmark of the parties which were the product of the Mandal movement such as RJD, Janata Dal (United), LJP etc, but now the BJP has also adopted the same strategy.
