Patna,(BiharTimes): The day-long Patna bandh call given by 22-member Left parties against recent power tariff hike announced by Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) evoked partial response and passed off peacefully on Thursday.
|
The protesters took to streets and sought immediate roll back of the power tariff hike in both domestic and commercial sectors. Their demands also included scrapping of the Central Electricity Act, 2003, and restructuring of the State Electricity Boards (SEBs), including BSEB.
While the bandh call had been given under the banner of a front formed to coordinate agitation against hike in power tariff, the Left parties whose members participated in the bandh were the CPI, CPM, CPI(ML) and the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI).
In last one and a half years the state government has increased power tariff about half a dozen times.
