Miraculous escape for IndiGo passengers after bird-hit

Patna,(BiharTimes): Patna’s Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport is once again in the news, obviously for wrong reason.

A flock of birds, most probably vultures from densely vegetated Patna Zoo in the vicinity, hit the Visakhapatnam-bound (via New Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore) IndiGo airline’s Airbus, which was about to take off for Delhi on Thursday morning and damaged its engine before the captain applied the emergency brakes.

The birds appeared when A320, carrying 89 passengers and six crew members, had started its run preceding the take-off.

The pilot applied the emergency brakes, bringing the plane to a screeching halt seconds before take-off. The birds had hit the left engine of the aircraft.

Passengers were later accommodated on other flights of IndiGo from Patna.

This is not the first case of bird-hit in Patna. In fact a plane crashed just outside Patna airport in July 2000 killing 57 passengers and crew members. But that was not attributed to the bird-hit.

Besides small runway, the presence of big trees in the Zoo often causes problem to the plane landing at the airport. Apart from tall trees, meat given to tigers, lions etc in the Zoo also attracts vultures and other big birds.
