Patna,(BiharTimes): Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on Saturday denounced the prevalence of the unique concept of Mukhiya Pati in Bihar.
Mukhiya Pati (MP), Sarpanch Pati (SP) and Pramukh Pati (PP) refer to a practice where the husband of the elected panchayat representatives wields power by proxy and in many cases women never attend the meeting.

Calling it a “shame” he said such practice would kill the panchayati raj and need not be followed.
Ramesh, who was in Rohtas, as a part of his tour to the Maoist-affected district of the country, noticed absence of women representative in the meetings. Instead he was greeted by the mukhiya pati (husband of the mukhiya) who, according to the Union minister, looks like a Bollywood star. He asked the district officials not to encourage them.
The Union Minister’s visit to the district came after CRPF Director General K Vijay Kumar apprised him about the law and order situation in the district.
Ramesh reiterated that it is time to push development in the area where the Maoist menace is under control.
He said the government is planning to implement the Saranda development model in the areas which has been freed from the Maoists. “If we are not able to push development in the cleared area, it will invite the Maoist problem again,” he said.
The presence of Mukhiya Pati in the meeting addressed by a Union Minister came as a huge shock as only a few months back Bihar’s rural works minister, Bhim Singh, had issued order banning their presence in any official meeting.
