Commerce College teacher accused of molesting girls

Patna,(BiharTimes): Following a strong protest by students a senior teacher of Zoology Department of College of Commerce, Pramod Kumar, was on Wednesday suspended for allegedly molesting five girls. An arrest warrant has also been issued against him.

According to students the professor was accused of molesting on several occasions. On Tuesday, five girls submitted a written complaint to the principal alleging that Pramod had molested them.

A large number of students staged a demonstration in front of the chamber of college principal, S K Singh, and locked him on Wednesday morning demanding his arrest. They raised slogans against the administration accusing it of shielding Pramod. The students even damaged the property of the college.

Magadh University Vice Chancellor Arun Kumar visited the college and suspended the teacher. The VC constituted a committee to probe into the allegation and asked its members to submit the report within 48 hours. The college administration, too, constituted a 15-member panel comprising teachers, non-teaching staff and students to probe the case.

The police raided the Hanuman Nagar residence of the teacher but is yet to be arrested.

A student of Zoology told media that the teacher tried to make advances on the pretext of patting students on several occasions. The girl also claimed that they objected to his misbehaviour in the past but he did not mend his ways. They also said that they raised the issue with the administration several times but no action has been taken yet.

However, a senior teacher, also a member of the college inquiry committee, said Pramod is a senior teacher and they have never heard of any such misbehaviour till now. Prima facie it appears that some students’ union wanted to garner support on the issue as the university is slated to go for the students’ body elections soon.

A police team led by City SP Jayant Kant reached the place and brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, two inquiry teams have been formed to investigate the matter. One of them includes DK Yadav, registrar, Magadh University, Professor N K Yadav and Professor Ramgopal Singh. This committee would submit the report to the Vice Chancellor within 48 hours.

The second inquiry team was constituted by the college administration. This team includes six professors, two college staff and two students, who would prepare their report by September 3. An internal meeting of the college administration would be held on that date.

Though the students have raised serious allegations, the teachers’ association of the college has a different take on the issue. It criticized the act of students. They demanded a complete probe into the allegations and justice to the professor concerned within 48 hours. The association claimed that a few students incited other students against the professor for their vested interest.
