Bihar has second highest number of poor in the country

Patna,(BiharTimes): Though number-wise Uttar Pradesh, with 7.37 crore, had the highest number of poor population in the country, it is Bihar which has percentage-wise much larger number of poor.

According to the Tendulkar Committee, Bihar had 5.43 crore poor in 2009-10. The population of the state is around 10.40 crore.

It was followed by Maharashtra 2.70 crore, Madhya Pradesh 2.61 crore, West Bengal 2.40 crore, Andhra Pradesh 1.76 crore, Rajasthan 1.67 crore, Odisha 1.53 crore, Karnataka 1.42 crore, Gujarat 1.36 crore, Jharkhand 1.26 crore, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh 1.21 crore each, Assam 1.16 crore and Haryana 49.96 lakh.

The data also showed that the number of poor in the entire country during 2009-10 was 35.46 crore.
