Patna,(BiharTimes): An innocent labourer from Bihar, Amir, was tied to the electric pole, painted black and publicly insulted for over 10 hours by the local people in Kerala’s capital on Monday.
According to media reports quoting police the people in Varkala near Thiruvanthipuram were looking for a youth, “a black man”, allegedly involved in a theft in the district. But when they saw the 22-year-old youth early on Monday morning, they caught hold of him and spread the word that the “fugitive black man” has been caught.

Amir, according to reports, was then tied to an electric post and painted black to give an impression that he is the “black man”. He was also forcibly made to wear a black shawl.
The police was informed later that a youth has been nabbed with tools used for theft. When the police reached the spot, the mob did not allow them to leave with the youth. Later when senior police officers intervened, they agreed.
But this did not stop the police from booking Amir on charges of attempt to theft. He was later remanded in judicial custody.
“He had not committed any crime. Amir was a migrant worker. He became a victim of the ‘black man’ threat,” Varkala Police Inspector S Shaji was quoted in the Indian Express.
He said the youth might have landed in trouble because he did not know Malayalam and so could not have been in a position to answer the questions of the local people.
