Patna, Feb 8 (IANS) A 1.8 km bridge that will be a lifeline to millions was opened over the flood-prone Kosi in Bihar Wednesday, 78 years after an earthquake destroyed an earlier one.
Hundreds gathered on the occasion applauded as central Road Transport and Highways Minister C.P. Joshi opened the bridge in the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The 20.76 meters wide Kosi Mahasetu will cut the journey time between Madhubani and Supaul districts by around five hours. It would usually take about eight hours.
A devastating earthquake in 1934 snapped the major communication link between the two districts.
With the rail bridge on the Kosi caving in, people began to rely on boats or circuitous roads to travel.
The National Highway Authority of India said the bridge was built at an outlay of over Rs.400 crore by Gammon India.
