Patna College to be developed into Centre of Excellence: Nitish

Patna,(BiharTimes): Chief minister Nitish Kumar said on Monday that all out efforts would be made to develop Patna College into the Centre of Excellence.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the 150th year of its foundation chief minister said that fund would be no constraint in the growth of this oldest institute of higher learning in Bihar.

He said the College would get Rs two crore for renovation of its old buildings in the current financial year.

Besides, funds would be sanctioned for construction of a new building called Shatabdi Bhawan on the campus to commemorate the 150th year of the college. An additional floor would be added to the college examination hall to avoid disruption of teaching work during examinations, he added.

Nitish recalled the contributions of the college and listed the names of great personalities produced by it.

Reminiscing his student’s day he said he studied in Patna Science College and Bihar College of Engineering, both of which were born out of Patna College. “We must take pledge to restore its glory,” he added.

Nitish called on the college authorities to convene a meeting of its eminent alumni, including the present principal secretary of higher education, Anjani Kumar Singh, who was present on the occasion to chalk out a plan for the development of the College.

The chief minister unfurled the college flag and released 150 balloons of different colours. He also planted a sapling on the campus and called upon teachers and students to plant trees to protect environment from being degraded.

Bihar Assembly Speaker Uday Narain Chaudhary, who is also an alumnus of this College, said the state government was trying its best to raise the standard of education. Chaudhary, who was guest of honour, said a number of new institutions had been set up in recent years and the existing ones were being strengthened. He hoped that Patna College would attain new heights and enhance the pride and prestige of the state.

Public Health Education Department minister Chandra Mohan Rai said the College should develop itself into a research-oriented institution. He pleaded for reviving its glorious traditions.

Patna University Vice Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh, in his presidential address, said the entire university had potential of being developed into an excellent institution. PU is the most suitable place for introducing latest trends and innovations in higher education and it could become the number one university of the country, he added.

Patna College principal Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh welcomed the guests and English department teacher Ila Sinha proposed a vote of thanks. Hindi teacher Tarun Kumar conducted the function.

The importance of Patna College function increased because it is in the Seminar Hall of the College that the special session of Bihar Legislative Council would be held on January 20, 2012 to mark its 100th year. The first session of the Council was held in this very Hall on 20 January 1913.
