Centre to finance construction of border road along Nepal border

Patna,(BiharTimes): The idea of border road along Bihar-Nepal international boundary was first conceived by the defence ministry after the Chinese invasion in 1962. In fact the plan was to connect North East from Lucknow in UP so that army can also be moved easily.

But due to the presence of so many Himalayan rivers the work could not start. Now the Union home ministry has mooted the construction of two-lane road in India parallel to Nepal border to smoothen the
operations of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in its bid to maintain vigil on trans-border activities.
The 557 km two-lane border road will pass through seven districts bordering Nepal. The construction would require around Rs 2,600 crore over the next four years and Centre would share the major burden.

The Union government would provide Rs 1,799 crore for the construction of roads and bridges while the Bihar government would bear the remaining Rs 801 crore of the cost. The road is likely to be built by 2016.

The border road in Bihar would pass through West Champaran (110.35 km), East Champaran (74.29 km), Sitamarhi (89.50 km), Madhubani (40.15 km), Supaul (40.99 km), Araria (104.02 km) and Kishanganj (98.05 km). It would be constructed on various river embankments and include rural roads and major district roads.

Besides, this road would also link up and merge with around 118 km of the existing National Highways (a large part of East-West Corridor)––104 km of NH-104, 19 km of NH-57 and 5 km of NH-106.

Several big bridges would be built on this road and the cost for them would be borne by the Centre. The Union home ministry would finance construction of most of the bridges, and the state government would bear the cost of acquisition of land and maintenance of the road.
